12/03/2013
The Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) has submitted 20 suggestions to the central government for the upcoming budget for 2013-14.

Its proposals include a relief of 2% to the country’s tanning industry to provide what the PTA has described as “a level playing field with India, China and Bangladesh”.

Another suggestion is a complete ban on exports of wet blue, wet blue split, and of raw and pickled hides and skins.

At the same time, the PTA believes there should be a higher duty drawback rate on exports of finished leather and a reduction of duties for imports of important leather chemicals, including chromium sulphate, fat liquors, buffing paper, pigments, formic acid and dyes. These products can command duty has high as 25% at present. The PTA has suggested 5% for all these products.

Also among the suggestions is a proposal that the central government should provide a matching grant for groups of tanners to set up effluent treatment plants.
