Australia’s beef exporters see demand in China skyrocket

China will become Australia’s fourth-largest beef export market in the year to June 30, 2013, with imports jumping to around 50,000 tons from about 6,000 tons a year ago, according to the Australian Bureau of Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES).

China’s ban on Brazilian beef - after a case of BSE was discovered in a cow that died in 2010 - means other countries have benefitted.

Demand for beef in China is growing but production has lagged domestically, where pork tends to be more profitable, boosting the outlook for overseas beef suppliers.
