Lillian Cahn, who founded the Coach Leatherware Company in 1961 with her husband, died on Monday in Manhattan. She was 89.

Mrs Cahn designed the first bag modelled on a shopping bag, working with a thick cowhide often used in making baseball gloves.

By the early 1980s, Coach was selling about $20 million worth of handbags a year.

The Cahns sold the company in 1985 to the Sara Lee Corporation for a reported $30 million.

Coach reported net sales of $4 billion in 2012.
