Thousands protest against leather complex plans in India

Reports from India say thousands of protestors attended a public hearing regarding the construction of a leather complex, which is currently earmarked for a 400 acre site in Kota in the south east of the country.

The Hindu Times reported that protesters – worried about pollution the site could cause – threw chilli powder and sand at the officials, and 300 policemen were drafted in to restore order.

If it goes ahead, the Krishnapatnam International Leather Complex will comprise 25 tanning units and 21 leather processing units, able to process 300 tonnes of hides and skins per day.

Officials said they heard representations for and against the project and would present their findings to the government.
