There has been a 142% increase in the value of counterfeit leathergoods seized by customs at entry ports to the US, according to statistics published by the US Customs and Border Protection.

Of the $511 million in counterfeit bags seized in 2012, the majority were made in China.

Last week the authorities seized 1,500 counterfeit Hermes handbags in Los Angeles, destined for Mexico and the US. The shipments would be worth as much as $14 million if sold at full price, the agency said.
