Lessons for Uruguay in Ecuadorean turnaround

A meeting took place in Montevideo at the end of February between Uruguayan president, José Mújica, and Ecuador’s industry minister, Verónica Sión.

Ms Sión travelled to Uruguay at the invitation of the local footwear manufacturers’ association. In comments after the meeting, she said Mr Mújica had expressed interest in learning how Ecuador has achieved recent success in footwear manufacture and its supply chain.

Since 2006, Ecuadorean footwear manufacturers have increased sales by 200% and exports by 154%, the minister said, generating 100,000 new jobs in the footwear production chain in the process. “I shared with President Mújica the measures and tools we have used in Ecuador to achieve this success,” she explained. “In 2006, the leather and footwear industry was on the point of disappearing in Ecuador. Around 60% of companies in the supply chain had shut down.”

Among the measures that led to such a large turnaround were government policies to help manufacturers gain access to finance, and to have a strong commitment to technological innovation.
