The head of one of Australia’s largest exporters of beef has said consumer demand has dropped globally because of the fear of cattle disease.

Sanger Australia CEO Richard Rains said BSE – issues around which are affecting Brazil’s exports – Bovine TB and the European horse meat scandal are making people less trusting of beef, and could have permanent effects.

He told Australia’s ABC News: “Whenever these diseases occur, it's just not good for consumption anywhere. It's that mistrust created with the consumer and a number of consumers I'm sure we've lost, not just for a little while, but probably for good."
