Prime minister predicts bright future for Ethiopian leather
28/02/2013
Speaking at the opening, the prime minister, a civil engineer and expert in water sanitation in his earlier professional life, said Ethiopia had not been able to benefit fully in the past from its livestock resource. He said that, for a long time, the country has been exporting too many raw hides and skins rather than adding value on home soil.
However, he said his government had put in place strategies to enable the tanning sector in the African country to become more globally competitive. Mr Hailemariam added that exports of value added products from the tanning industry would reach a value of $500 million by 2015.
Almost 50 companies from 20 countries signed up to exhibit at AALF 2013.
