COTANCE calls for leather labelling progress

The leather industry’s representative body in the European Union, COTANCE, has called on the European Commission to expand its policy on labelling of consumer products to help consumers recognise and appreciate leather.

The subject came up for discussion at a meeting of the COTANCE council on February 18. The organisation said securing legal protection for the term leather “against abuse and mis-descriptions” remained one of its priorities. “This is a matter on which the international leather community is looking for authoritative solutions coming from Europe,” COTANCE said in a statement after the meeting.

While the labelling of textiles and footwear (including leather footwear) is regulated at EU level, no EU legislation covers the labelling of leather and leather products as such, COTANCE has argued, saying that studies carried out on the subject show clearly that there is a need for “authenticity labelling” at least.

It called on the European Commission to carry out an assessment of the impact legislation in this area is likely to have in terms of helping consumers in the EU make “better-informed purchase choices”.
