Leathergoods trader made good dies

One of Germany’s greatest entrepreneurs, Otto Beisheim, has died at the age of 89, leaving a fortune estimated by Bloomberg at more than $4.5 billion.

Mr Beisheim had been a widower since 1999 and had no children.

He made his fortune by importing the US cash-and-carry concept to the German retail industry in the 1960s, founding the Metro Group in 1964 and building it up to its position as the fifth-largest retail group in the world.

What is less well known is that Otto Beisheim began his professional life as a leathergoods trader in his native North Rhine-Westphalia.
