Australian prime minister’s office to get Scottish leather lift

Melbourne-based Leffler Leather, wholesale partner in Australia of the Scottish Leather Group, has announced that handmade, bespoke upholstery leather from the group’s Andrew Muirhead tannery for the refurbishment of the Australian prime minister’s office is now ready following two years of trials and approvals.

Leffler is waiting to instal the leather, in burnt orange and grey, at the prime minister’s office in Canberra at a convenient date.

It will cover furniture that has been in place in the office since Bob Hawke was the prime minister in the 1980s. It was held in storage while John Howard was in office between 1996 and 2007; his preference was for chesterfield-style sofas upholstered in green leather.

Designed by the architects responsible for the office’s design, the original furniture came back into service after Mr Howard’s departure and, with when Leffler Leather completes the project to intal the new upholstery from Andrew Muirhead, will receive a new lease of life.
