US leather-sector imports twelve times greater than exports in 2012

New figures from the US Department of Commerce show that in the course of 2012, tanners and traders across the country exported hides and skins with a value of almost $2.8 billion. The figure represents an increase of 4.3% on the hide and skin export revenues achieved by the US in 2011.

As for imports, companies in the US brought in hides and skins with a value of $226 million compared to $188 million in 2011, a rise of 20.2%.

In a separate entry in its figures, the department said the US had exported leather and allied products with a value of just over $2.8 billion in 2012. Imports in the same category had a value for the year of more than $36.1 billion.
