Bangladeshi leather industry is ahead of target on exports

Bangladesh’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) has said the country’s leather industry exceeded its export target by 3% during the first seven months of the current financial year, July 2012 to January 2013.

Over the seven-month period, tanners and finished product manufacturers in Bangladesh achieved export earnings of $537.3 million against a target of $521.6 million.

Footwear manufacturers claimed the biggest share of the total, registering exports worth $254.4 million, an increase of 14.4% on the previous financial year.

Tanners exported finish leather worth $198.9 million over the period, compared to $182.8 million over the same period in the previous financial year, growth of 8.8%. The value of leathergoods exports rose over the same period by 102.1% to $83.96 million.
