Hermès enjoys record sales in 2012

Luxury leathergoods brand Hermès has reported forecast-beating sales for 2012, as demand for its high-end handbags continues to grow.

Sales for the full year rose 22.6% to €3.48 billion, up from €2.84 billion a year earlier, beating analysts' expectations of €3.42 billion. In the fourth quarter, sales increased 18.5%.

In response to persistently strong demand, its leathergoods and saddlery division opened two new workshops in France last year, based in Charente and Isère.

Hermès bags – some of which retail at more than $10,000 – are particularly popular in China and the US, which were the areas that saw the most pronounced rise in sales.

Sales in Asia-Pacific, excluding Japan, were up 30% in the fourth quarter, and the Americas also saw strong growth, posting a 21% increase.
