Brazil’s monthly leather export figures for January 2013 showed an increase in value of 17.9% compared to the same month in 2012.

During January 2013, exports of hides and skins brought in revenues of $164 million.

Tanning industry body CICB said the figure represents a good start to the year. It added that exports of hides and skins in 2012 had a value of $2.07 billion, up by almost 1% from the figure for 2011, $2.05 billion.

CICB pointed out that Brazil’s export earnings from hides and skins in 2000 was $700 million. So in the course of this century, the industry’s external trade has increased in value by almost 200%. It said it felt its work to promote Brazilian leather at industry events including Le Cuir A Paris, APLF and ACLE had made an important contribution to this progress.
