Sales up in January for Audi and Mercedes

Volkswagen's luxury division Audi increased global sales by 16.3% in January, with Mercedes also reporting a rise in its luxury division of 9.2%.

Audi sales totalled 111,750 cars and sport-utility vehicles last month, powered by double-digit growth in China and Germany, the German carmaker said.

"Our popular SUV models and the new A3 family will help ensure that we will continue our growth course in 2013," Audi sales chief Luca de Meo said in a statement.

Daimler’s sales of its Mercedes division rose to 94,895 vehicles. Mercedes sales chief Joachim Schmidt said: "We are optimistic about 2013, although we need to be prepared for market volatility particularly in Western Europe over the months to come. We see growth potential especially in North America as well as in Japan, China and Russia."
