Lunch at Lineapelle leads to job for Northampton student

Emily Thomas, who completed her degree in footwear and accessories design at the University of Northampton in 2012, has revealed how a chance meeting at the Lineapelle leather exhibition in Bologna landed her a start in the industry.

Waiting to buy some food at lunchtime, she got chatting to London-based footwear designer Oliver Sweeney and his wife and convinced them to go back with her to the University of Northampton stand at the show.

Mr Sweeney was happy to discuss his design ideas for a forthcoming collection, and upon seeing Ms Thomas’s graduate collection, sponsored by Dr Martens and made from leather produced in the tannery that the university’s Institute for Creative Leather Technologies has on site in Northampton, he was impressed enough to offer her her first job.
