Chinese leathergoods firms should seek Italian help

A new report from the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA) says Chinese leathergoods manufacturers should work with their Italian counterparts to develop their own brands and grow their businesses, especially in the domestic market.

CLIA’s leathergoods committee met in mid-January and reported that growth in leathergoods production in China and of exports of Chinese-made leathergoods had slowed in 2012. It said weaknesses in the global market meant the days of high growth rates are unlikely to return.

However, the committee said that the time was right for Chinese leathergoods manufacturers to “come of age” now and develop their own brands and compete with one another through brand-building and product innovation. It said companies should “strengthen co-operation with their Italian counterparts” to improve in design and marketing.

China’s leathergoods industry still has a competitive industrial base, the committee concluded, a complete supply chain infrastructure and a potentially strong domestic market.
