Lamarthe finds new owners

French fashion group Verotrade has purchased the once high-flying Lamarthe leathergoods brand from Italian owner Sergiolin and said immediately it would open six own-brand stores, mostly in different locations in Paris, this year, with store-openings, under franchise agreements, to follow in China.

The brand began in 1930, created by artisan leathergoods manufacturer Alfred Lamarthe. Industry commentators have said that it reached its peak in the 1980s and was, at that time, spoken of as being one of the three Ls, with the other two being Longchamps and Lancel, both of which went on to finish the twentieth century and begin the twenty-first in a much stronger position.

In 2004, Lamarthe was purchased by three Italian entrepreneurs, who ran the company until entering administration and then liquidation in 2010. It was at this point that Sergiolin bought the brand, keeping one store in Paris and one in Spain, as well as supply arrangements with a number of department stores.
