GDS pulls out of Shanghai joint venture

Messe Dusseldorf, the company that organises the GDS footwear and leathergoods exhibition twice a year in the German city, has announced that a planned GDS Select event to run alongside the China International Footwear & Leathergoods (CIFL) exhibition in April in Shanghai will not now go ahead.

In a statement,
Messe Dusseldorf said: “Due to altered framework conditions, the cooperation aspired to by GDS Select with the Shanghai Fashion Week and Micam has not materialised against the backdrop of irreconcilable differences. The interests of the respective parties could not be taken into consideration to a mutually beneficial extent. Therefore, with the best interests of the shoe industry as a whole in mind, Messe Dusseldorf is withdrawing from the intended participation.”

Rival Milan-based footwear event Micam announced at the end of last week that its new Micam Shanghai event will be an official part of Shanghai Fashion Week. In earlier discussions,
Messe Dusseldorf had suggested working jointly with Micam to set up a high-end European footwear event in Shanghai. Unable to agree, each European organiser arranged to run a separate event in the Chinese city on different dates in April.

With momentum appearing to build up behind Micam Shanghai,
Messe Dusseldorf seems to have decided not to try to compete. Asked if the idea of running a GDS event alongside CIFL might come up for discussion again for future events, Messe Dusseldorf said it did not want to make any further comment.

CIFL will go ahead as planned in Shanghai from April 17-19. Micam Shanghai will take place for the first time this year, from April 9-11.
