A fourth gold for PrimeAsia Vietnam
24/01/2013
Grade A traceability means that more than 90% of hides bought by PrimeAsia Vietnam, which works from wet blue, are traceable to the slaughterhouse they came from. The tannery, located in Ba Ria-Vung Tau, purchases all its hides from LWG gold-rated beamhouses.
This is the fourth time PrimeAsia Vietnam has achieved gold accreditation or reaccreditation from the LWG. PrimeAsia Leather’s environmental manager, Sarah Swenson, said on making the announcement that she believed her company had achieved this milestone thanks to its “dedication and focus on saving energy, reducing water usage, and increasing environmental management”.
Between LWG audits at the Vietnamese facility in 2011and 2013, energy usage there decreased by 7%. The percentage of energy taken from renewable sources increased by 36.5% because a biomass boiler powered by rice husks came into operation between the audits. At current production levels, half of energy requirements are from renewable sources, Ms Swenson said. The tannery also has a large solar energy installation.
Requirements to attain gold status are becoming stricter all the time, with the LWG updating its protocol with input from the tanners, footwear brands and chemical companies that make up its members. PrimeAsia is a founding member of the LWG, which began auditing tanneries and promoting sustainability in the global leather industry in 2005.
