Coach to focus on footwear to boost slowing sales

24/01/2013
Luxury leathergoods brand Coach reported lower-than-expected sales for the final quarter of 2012, and will increase its focus on shoes and clothing to bolster earnings.

It will "relaunch" its shoe section at 170 of its 356 stores in March, and has begun to install shoe salons to showcase its footwear.

Strong sales internationally were offset by weakened sales in the US, which the US-based company attributed to economic uncertainty and Superstorm Sandy.

It reported sales of $1.5 billion for the quarter, which was 4% up from last year, but it was the slowest rate of growth since 2008.

International sales increased 12% to $411 million, partly driven by a 40% gain in China.
