Russia mulls possible ban on Brazilian beef

Media in Brazil have reported that discussions between the government there and the Russian authorities have made it clear that Russia could join the list of countries that have banned imports of Brazilian beef owing to an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), which occurred in the state of Paraná in 2010, but only came to light in 2012.

At a meeting in Germany in mid-January, Russian authorities told a Brazilian delegation that the government in Moscow was unhappy at what they called a lack of information offered to important trading partners about the case and that, because of that, the Russian government will consider a ban.
