Uruguayan firm granted permission for live sheep shipment

Uruguayan exporter Gladenur has received permission from the South American country’s ministry for livestock and agriculture to go ahead with a shipment of 75,000 live sheep. The animals will be shipped to Saudi Arabia in early February.

Saudi Arabia has imported sheep from Uruguay for many years, but exporters in Uruguay have said competition from Australia has intensified in recent years, making the market in the Middle East difficult for them.

Some commentators in Uruguay have said they hope this new shipment will represent a new beginning for the country as a supplier of live animals to customers in the Middle East.
