EU beef and hides in short supply in 2013

A report on the beef industry in the European Union (EU) compiled by analysts at Rabobank shows that cattle supply and slaughter rates are low and that packers and abattoirs will struggle to secure supply in 2013, with the obvious knock-on effect for supplies of hides to tanneries in Europe and beyond.

According to the Rabobank report, the kill in the EU in the first four months of 2012 was 5% lower than in the same months in 2011. In the period between May and August 2012, the decline was 4%. Analysts said the lower numbers were compensated for by a decline in consumption of beef in the EU and a fall in exports. They calculated that consumption fell by 3.3% in January-August 2012 compared to the same period they year before and put the drop in beef exports from the EU over the same period at 18%.

The situation is unlikely to improve in 2013. The report predicts a fall of 8% in slaughter levels in the first half of this year, but a decrease of only 0.5% in the second half.
