Unusually cold weather in China is wreaking havoc with the country’s farming industry, killing at least 180,000 cattle, according to local reports.

News agency Xinhua said officials reported that the animals have had difficulties finding food as snow on the ground is too thick.

In northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, snow has accumulated to 40 cm thick in towns and 60 cm in rural areas, and shelters have been set up for the elderly and homeless.

Heavier-than-usual snowfall is forecast across the country for the coming week.
