CLIA issues stark warning to tanners

Mr Su said the time had come for Chinese tanners to make the environment their top priority. He explained that leather production across the country currently produces 0.5% of the total effluent discharge in China and he said more recycling and cleaner production methods were essential.
He went on to say that only 49 tanneries out of the national total (believed to be around 3,300) had the necessary accreditation from CLIA to use its Eco-Leather Mark Certificate, confirming that they meet high standards in clean production as well as in quality. However, these Eco-Leather tanneries produce only 12.5% of all Chinese leather.
More restrictions from the various tiers of government in cities and provinces are certain to come, he warned, meaning that if tanneries fail to update their production and waste management practices they will no longer be allowed to tan hides.
