JBS to conclude Canadian deal

Brazilian packer and tanning group JBS has announced that it will conclude its acquisition of the assets of Canadian firm XL Foods on January 14.

The list of assets includes XL’s abattoir in Brooks, Alberta, which has a slaughter capacity of 4,000 head of cattle a day, as well as an abattoir that XL has in Calgary, Alberta, with a capacity of 1,000 head per day. The final components of the deal are a feedyard in Brooks with capacity for 70,000 head and land surrounding the feedyard.

XL Foods agreed the deal with JBS in October. The Canadian regulatory authorities have now approved the acquisition.

Acquisition of two US abattoirs, in Omaha, Nebraska and Nampa, Idaho, may still be part of the deal with XL Foods but are subject to separate approval by the US authorities. JBS has confirmed that XL Foods is still running those two plants, which have a combined capacity of more than 2,000 head per day, but says it still has an option to buy them.
