India: tanneries to close during ‘biggest gathering on earth’

Hafeezur Rehman, president of Small Tanners Association, told the paper that the tanneries would either remain closed or continue with work other than leather processing. Around 15,000 temporary workers could be unemployed during the 55-day Hindu festival.
The Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama is reported to be attending the festival, which has been called the biggest gathering on earth and will begin on January 15. According to the mela administration's estimates, around 70 million people participated in 2007.
