Lack of orders forces Uruguayan tannery into go-slow

07/01/2013
A tannery that opened for business in March 2012 has had to apply for special help from the authorities to provide financial support to its 55 workers. It is halting production because of a lack of orders and a lack of raw material.

The tannery, El Águila, began tanning hides in the southern department of Florida last year in an existing facility that had lain empty for two years. Because the company has been running for less than a year, the workers have no entitlement to unemployment benefit.

A co-operative runs the tannery and its representatives have said they hope the slow-down will be limited to the summer months when raw material supplies are particularly low.
