Leather leaders from India and Pakistan hold talks

02/01/2013
A meeting took place at the start of the year between Rafeeque Ahmed, chairman of the Indian Council for Leather Exports, and his counterpart in Pakistan, Agha Saiddain, chairman of the Pakistan Tanners’ Association.

During the meeting, Mr Ahmed encouraged Pakistan to put into place some of the ideas that have helped the Indian leather industry in recent years.

He made a specific reference to seven mega leather clusters that India will develop, an idea that the Indian industry has talked about for a number of years and which the government has promised to back. However, in some of the early developments, local authorities in India have said they will not allow tanners to operate on the site of the new clusters.

Mr Ahmed’s comments at the meeting, which took place in Lahore, suggest the hope of producing leather on the sites of mega leather clusters in India is still alive. In fact, he suggested that tanning groups from Pakistan should consider siting part of their production across the border to take advantage of the “world-class facilities” the clusters will offer.
