UK market is key for Smythson

UK-based leathergoods retailer Smythson has reported a rise in turnover to £24.5?million for the year to the end of March, up from £20.3?million the year before.

Samantha Cameron, the wife the UK’s prime minister, still works for the 125 year-old company in a part-time advisory role, having left her position of creative director in 2010.

While sales in the UK were strong, exports were down, and a rise in rental rates and marketing costs caused pre-tax profits to dip from £2.4?million to £2.1?million.

The company is now planning to invest in its network of UK stores and is relaunching its website
