Spring-summer 2014 trend forecast from BASF

Specialty chemicals company BASF has unveiled its trend predictions for spring-summer 2014 based on three major themes.

The main inspiration for the season will be geometry, the company has said, with colours tending towards the bright and cheerful. Geometric, the main trend, is present in all the trends, sometimes very visibly and sometimes more subtly. “We redefine values and find inspiration in the geometry of nature and in rational, mathematical thought,” BASF said on making the announcement. “We advocate simplicity and its contrast with the opulence of the Far East.”

The “exuberant foliage and birds of unexplored paradises” have inspired palettes of bright, vibrant tropical colours and “a floral effusion”, along with splashes of citrus, and bright and shady effects. Watery blue and green monochrome evoke “the perfect, crystal clear waters of the Pacific islands”. Dark blues suggest the depths and endlessness of the ocean, while coral reefs are interpreted as a spectrum of coral pink and orange shades.

There is also harmony between pastel colours and greys, while metallic tones run through “like liquid” to create constantly-changing colour. All the greens featured are strong, BASF said, particularly khaki, moss and olive. Neutral tones latch on to watery greens and pale pinks. Reds fit the pink and orange spectrum. Golden yellows mingle with woody colours. Pale violet joins with greyish lilac and touches of metallic grey.

For wet-end processes, the company has said that a new range of formaldehyde-free syntans, such as Basyntan EF Liquid New, Basyntan FO and Basyntan AS, with resins, like Relugan FS and its new generation of waterproofing products Densodrin DP and Densodrin EP, can help tanners produce high-quality crust. Finishing this can be with new polyurethanes such as Astacin Finish PT and Astacin Finish PTM or Astacin Finish PS, all of which are free of NMP (N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone) and NEP (N-Ethyl-2-pyrrolidone), or with water-based patent imitation polyurethane Astacin Top LL.
