Tough start to the financial year for leather in Pakistan

Pakistan’s leather-sector exports for the month of October had a value of $89.4 million, down by 1.9% compared to September 2012.

Within this, the value of leathergoods exports increased, by 9%, to reached $48.9 million for the month. However, finished leather exports had a value of $34.6 million, a decrease of 12.7%, and footwear exports brought in $5.8 million in export revenues, 12.6% down on September’s total.

The total for the first four months of the current financial year, July-October, is $359.2 million for the whole sector, a decline of 6.5% compare to the same period a year earlier. Over the four months, Pakistani tanners exported just over 7.1 million square-metres of finished leather, with a value of $143.5 million. This represents a fall in volume of 12.4% but a rise in value of 2.4%.
