Canada-based private equity firm Novocap has bought a chain of leathergoods stores and brought in the founder of the Winners retail chain, David Margolis, to be its new chief executive.

Bentley Group operates more than 400 stores across Canada selling luggage, purses, handbags and briefcases under banners including Bentley, Access and Unic.

The company was founded by Andy Chelminski in Newfoundland in 1987 and has expanded to become one of the largest retailers of luggage in Canada through a combination of opening new stores and the acquisition of competing chains. Mr Chelminski is retiring.

Financial terms of the deal were not announced.
