Indonesian government wants better beef supply, at least for Jakarta

The government of Indonesia has said it will take steps to raise more cattle on home soil because a shortfall in beef in the local market, provoked after Australia applied an export ban following a television company’s broadcast earlier this year of poor conditions and treatment of animals at Indonesian abattoirs, is becoming more acute.

A government decision to import less beef from other sources to boost the local livestock and beef industries appears to have been premature. Economics minister Hatta Rajasa said the government wanted to bring cattle from other parts of Indonesia to feedlots within reach of Jakarta so that the capital city, at least, can have an improved supply of beef.
