Kenya mulls raw hides ban

30/11/2012
A bill that looks to protect Kenya’s leather industry has been given the nod by cabinet and will now be debated in parliament.

It proposes a total ban on the export of raw hides and skins in order to make leather products competitive, according to reports in local press.

It also suggests a ban on the importation of second-hand shoes and clothes, as well as a 2% levy on imported leather products and clothes, which will make them more expensive, giving locally manufactured products an advantage. Money from the levy could be used to fund the local leather and textile industries, which have been in decline since the early 1990s.

The bill will now be discussed in parliament.
