BMW chooses olive-tanned leather for new coupe

29/11/2012
BMW has unveiled its latest premium class model, the i3 Concept Coupe, which it describes as a “particularly nimble and emotive version of its concept for sustainable premium-class motoring”.

Fitting in with the sustainable concept, the leather in the interior is treated using natural products, with an extract from the leaves of olive trees serving as the tanning agent. The door support panels are made from anthracite-coloured kenaf fibre, which will blend with the doors’ leather trim panels, and there are two individual rear seats.

The German carmaker claims the model is the world’s first fully networked electric vehicle, with the navigation and information systems connected to the driver’s smartphone. It can cover about 160 kilometres on its battery before it has to be plugged into a charging station.

The car is due to go into production at the end of next year.
