Chile lifts ban on Paraguayan beef

23/11/2012
Chile’s government has announced that it will allow imports of beef from Paraguay into the country again.

It banned shipments of Paraguayan beef in September 2011, following an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease among Paraguayan cattle. Before the outbreak, Chile was the biggest export market for Paraguayan packers.

Exports to other important markets, including Russia, have recommenced already. With Chile opening up its market again, industry representatives in Paraguay have said they believe abattoirs there will return to full production. They are currently operating at around 85% of capacity.
