Camelids on the rise in Bolivia

Bolivia’s population of camelids (llamas, alpacas, vicuñas and guanacos) is on the increase, according to official government figures.

Víctor Hugo Vásquez, a junior minister in the government’s rural development department, said in a recent announcement that the herd size had increased by 500,000 head in the last six years and now stands at three million head in total.

Mr Vásquez explained that the government will promote the raising of camelids as livestock and added that it also wanted to promote the consumption of meat from these animals as a “healthier alternative” to beef.

Government initiatives have helped producers to set up associations for promoting meat, wool and leather from these animals. Official figures show that eight industry bodies dedicated to producing and promoting leather from camelids have been set up so far.
