Tannery waste recycling project works well for JBS

Brazilian packer and tanning group JBS has set up an innovation and sustainability unit for its leather division, called DISC (Divisa~o de Inovac¸a~o e Sustentabilidade do Couro).

In an update on progress that the group circulated in mid-November, it said a DISC project to recycle wet blue shavings and trimmings in Campo Grande has been a success.

JBS said the Campo Grande plant was currently processing 200 tonnes of residue per month but that this volume would double in the near future. It is working with material from JBS tanneries that used to go into landfill, “
creating a new profit source for the company and improving its environmental performance”.

Protein and chromium are separated through a hydrolysis process. The protein, in powder or liquid form, is currently sold as raw material to chemical companies and used to make new products for the leather industry.

JBS says it plans to develop similar units in other locations around Brazil.
