Argentine minister hints at measures to discourage crust exports

Argentina’s industry minister, Débora Giorgi, has hinted that she will take steps to make it harder for the country’s tanners to export wet blue or crust. The minister wants operators to add more value in Argentina.

At the moment, there is an export tax of 15% on raw or salted hides, and of 5% on crust and wet blue. “Exports of semi-finished hides is not the future I see for Argentina as we move towards 2020,” Ms Giorgi said.

Some industry sources have told local media that they interpret this as a message that the government will take steps to discourage exports of crust and wet blue.

Problems of securing raw material appear to be easing slightly for tanners in Argentina. From a record slaughter of 16 million head in 2009, the total fell last year to 10.8 million head. However, slaughter rates in 2012 have picked up and industry experts expect the total for the year to be around 11.5 million.
