China’s National Council for Light Industry has reported a decline of 5.5% in the number of people employed in the leather and footwear production industries across the country.

In the provinces of Sichuan and Guangdong, both traditionally important areas for making leather and shoes, the decline was 17.2% and 12.8% respectively.

Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shandong provinces also experienced declines, because of weak demand in overseas markets, the council said.
