Meat demand expected to fall in path of Hurricane Sandy

Cattle farmers are waiting to see how their businesses will be affected in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, with reports that retailers in the path of the storm, particularly in the north eastern US, will be reluctant to place orders for beef.

With power out for millions of homes and businesses across the region, meat will be hard to store, and shipments will be delayed as roads close.

Consumers often stock up on non-perishable goods and water in such situations, and an analyst quoted by the Wall Street Journal said: "You're not going to be buying a lot of meat if your power is going to be out."

The huge storm has caused deaths in Haiti, the Caribbean, and at least 18 reported so far in the US.
