A new report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) suggests the US will import 2 million head of cattle in 2013, a reduction of 8% on the figure it projects for this year.

USDA expects almost 2.2 million head of cattle to be imported into the US in 2012. Imports from both Mexico and Canada have increased in 2012, particularly in the first half of the year.

According to the agency’s projections, the US will import just over 1 million tonnes of beef in 2012, around 15% more than in 2011. Imports from Australia and New Zealand are up this year. Until August, Australia’s beef exports to the US were 52% higher and New Zealand’s up by 6%. Industry observers expected an increase in imports of beef from Canada to the US too, but over the same period, shipments of Canadian beef were down by 9%.

Figures for imports from Mexico and Uruguay were also up substantially in the first eight months of this year, by 48% and 47% respectively.
