While growth in the luxury goods market in China is slowing, a study has shown that accessories have become the most important category in the luxury market globally.

For the first time, leathergoods and shoes are taking the largest slice of the market at 27% of sales, according to a report by US-based consultancy Bain & Co and Italian luxury goods trade body Altagamma.

Leathergoods sales are expected to grow the fastest at 16%, to reach €33bn by the end of this year. Shoes and jewellery are growing by 13%, to reach €12bn and €11bn respectively.

Bain estimates that the luxury goods market will grow at constant exchange rates by 4% to 6% a year between 2013 and 2015, bringing the market to over €250 billion.
