Slight fall in Australian beef export figures but huge rise in shipments to China

10/10/2012
Exports of Australian beef and veal in the first nine months are down by 2% compared to the figure for the same period in 2011. The 2012 total for January-September is just short of 80,000 tonnes.

A fall in demand in Japan and Korea, two key markets in which Australian meat faces strong competition from North American suppliers, coupled with currency exchange rates, are the main reasons commentators have given for the 2% decline.

However, in the first nine months of this year, exports of Australian beef and veal to China increased by 91% compared to the figure for the same period in 2011. So far this year, Australian packers have shipped 9,745 tonnes to China.
