BMW, the world’s largest premium car manufacturer, increased sales of its flagship brand by 14% in September thanks to booming growth in China.

"We expect to see further healthy growth in worldwide sales in the fourth quarter," Ian Robertson, BMW’s brand sales chief, said, adding the group was "well on course" to achieving a new sales record for the full year.

BMW brand sales rose 8.6%  to 1.11 million vehicles in the first nine months of the year.

Rival Audi’s luxury car division also increased sales in September, at a similar rate of 13.6%, to 136,600 vehicles, which it also credited with demand from China and also from the US.

Deliveries rose 12.8% to 1.1 million cars and sport utility vehicles in the first nine months of the year, driven by demand for models including the revamped A4 sedan and the Q5 SUV.

Daimler's Mercedes-Benz brand posted a 2% gain in September sales to 123,358 vehicles, extending the year-to-date increase to 5% or 964,926 cars.
