Exports make leather a EUR 5 billion industry in Italy in 2011

A new report from Italian tanners’ association Unic has said that the value of the output of the leather industry there in 2011 was around EUR 5 billion, representing a recovery of the levels of 2005, a time of economic boom.

Unic has said that 1,300 companies were involved in the industry in Italy in 2011, employing 18,000 people. In terms of volume, these companies produced 133 million square-metres of leather and 40,000 tonnes of sole leather. This makes 2011 the eighth consecutive year of negative growth in terms of volume of leather produced in Italy. However, Unic has said that this decline in volume is mainly because Italian tanners are now producing less material at the lower end of the market.

The organisation is pleased to have achieved a value of EUR 5 billion in 2011. “This recovery is exclusively because of exports,” it said on announcing the figures. “The internal market is flat, although on a positive note it’s losing no ground. Exports of leather were worth EUR 3.7 billion in 2011, an increase of 10% on the year before.”
