EU demands action on two leather products

08/10/2012
The European Commission has called on retailers and consumers in the European Union to take immediate action on two different products containing leather.

A decorative leather wristband on sale in Hungary under the name Bijou Brigitte is one of the items to have come under scrutiny. The wristbands were made in China. According to the European Commission, the product fails to meet the requirements of REACH legislation because the leather contains azo dyes releasing benzidine and 4-aminobiphenyl at levels exceeding the limits that REACH allows.

The European Commission issued instructions saying retailers must withdraw the product from the market and recall wristbands already sold to consumers.

At the same time, the organisation said retailers must withdraw from the market a woman’s shoe, made for Bata in Bulgaria and on sale in that country, because of the presence of chromium VI. The particular model is the Flexible Pella Vera.
